Urbana FFA competes in County Soils

Urbana FFA members competed in the county soil judging Career Development Event. The competition was hosted in Champaign County with the help of the Champaign County Soil and Water District. In soil competitions there are two different types of judging; Urban and Rural. In Urban students judge the soil based on four different categories. Those include: buildings with basements, septic tanks, and absorption fields, driveways and local roads, lawns, gardens, and landscaping. After the pits were judged the students were asked to give recommendations to practice determining whether or not the land is suitable for the four categories. In Rural students judge the soil based on different agricultural properties and they have to determine whether the soil is suitable for different crops. Urbana as a team placed first in the county. For Rural Bryce Stambaugh placed 2nd in the county, Brooklyn Randall placed 3rd, Colton Teepe placed 4th, Sam Wilhelm placed 5th, Clayton Schafer placed 7th, Lauren Stollings placed 8th, Isabell Shoemaker placed 10th. For Urban, Maddie Farmer placed 3rd in the county, Michael Hooten placed 6th, Maddie Long placed 7th, Kianna Gsell placed 8th.
