The Urbana United Methodist Church will host a free concert, 4 p.m. Sunday, September 22, by accomplished pipe organist Dr. Yun Kim in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the installation of the church’s pipe organ.

Dr. Kim, organist and director of music at Christ Episcopal Church in Dayton, has performed extensively across the U.S. as a concert organist. Concert reviewers have described her performances as “remarkable” and “uniquely spectacular,” and that she “plays with great sensitivity and great elan.”

Urbana UMC, 238 N. Main St., entered a contract with Peebles-Herzog, Inc. of Columbus in 1992 to build the organ. The installation was completed in 1994 under the direction of Michael Lauffer, tonal director, and Dr. Ritter Werner, consultant. The instrument features a console with two manuals and 20 ranks, or sets of pipes.

A reception, with refreshments, will follow the concert to allow concertgoers to meet the artist.

Karen Bocko, Urbana UMC’s organist, says, “I feel that sacred music on a pipe organ is giving God the best. It’s my honor to bring glory to God with this instrument.”

Pipe organs have played a significant role in worship at Urbana UMC since 1879. The original organ was replaced in 1930 by a pipe organ that was moved from the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, which stood on the site of the current Urbana Post Office.

An elevator entrance is available on the West Church Street side of the church.
