MECHANICSBURG – The Mechanicsburg Village Council met on Monday, Sept. 2 at a regularly-scheduled meeting in the municipal building.

Council member Scott Wilson spoke as a village citizen and thanked all who participated and volunteered at the car show the weekend prior.

Village Administrator Roger Brake presented the administrator’s report. Brake shared that Columbia Gas has decided to replace the gas lines on West Race Street prior to the paving of Walnut Street. It was stated that Columbia Gas is doing this at no charge to the village due to the existing lines being so shallow.

Brake went on to share that excavation work will begin in the coming weeks for the new salt barn construction. He also said that they are looking for volunteers to help prep and/or paint the outside of the firehouse within the coming weeks.

Brake later mentioned the Ohio Department of Transportation has given the village approval to install digital radar speed signage within the village. Council approved the purchase of four signs at the cost of approximately $12,500.

Zoning Officer Dusty Hurst shared that there will be a Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the municipal building. He stated that this meeting is to discuss the improvements and accessory structures located at Heritage Cooperative. Hurst said that the request involves a new grain leg and the replacement of a current grain storage bin. Public attendance is open and encouraged for anyone who has questions or concerns.

Assistant Fire Chief Steve Castle shared that the new fire truck, Tanker 30, is in service.

Mechancisburg Police Chief David Patrick requested approval for 6 vehicles to be auctioned on govdeals.com – approval was given by the council.

Council then went into two separate executive sessions. One to discuss “hiring and a possible conflict of interest” and the other to discuss “legal matters.”

After the executive sessions, the council decided to “approve using American Rescue Plan grant funds to pay retention bonuses for the police department. This grant was specifically created to help small police departments compete with the salaries of larger municipalities,” according to Mayor Jason Adelsberger.

The village council will meet next on Monday, Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the municipal building. Village council meetings are open to the public.
