ST. PARIS – His Hands Extended Sanctuary, located at 1560 Dialton Road near St. Paris, experienced a break-in and theft of items during the hours between 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1 and 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2.

According to a sheriff’s report, cash was stolen from a lock box and a 2014 Kawasaki Mule610 used on the grounds was missing. The medical cabinets in the veterinary office were also accessed by the perpetrators and a safe was pried open. Items for an upcoming auction to benefit the sanctuary were also stolen. In addition, investigators found the hard drive for the security camera system was taken.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

According to its Facebook page, “His Hands Extended Sanctuary stands in the gap for homeless pets and provides medical care, food, shelter and most important lots of love to begin the rebuilding of shattered lives.”

Injured stray animals, including cats and kittens with broken legs, are part of the sanctuary’s mission.

“Thieves broke into our clinic, stole all our start-up money for the week and a donation that had been dropped off to help with the surgeries, from the cash register, vandalized the clinic, and emptied out a third of our Quarter Auction items to be used for much-needed fundraising from our storage shed, then proceed to the locked big barn, stole a Kawasaki Mule that the staff uses to travel over the 32 acres and care for the animals, and our security and camera system,” the sanctuary posted on its Facebook page on Sept. 2.

The sanctuary relies heavily on fundraisers and donations. More information can be found on its Facebook page.
