Urbana knocks off Northeastern, 44-35

Grady Lantz passed for four touchdowns as Urbana held off visiting Northeastern, 44-35, in a non-league football season opener Friday night.

A Diezel Taylor touchdown early in the first quarter gave Northeastern a 7-0 lead.

Late in the first quarter, Urbana tied the game at 7-7 on a 12-yard Lantz touchdown pass to Bizz Cain.

After a Northeastern fumble in the final seconds of the first quarter, the Hillclimbers scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Lantz to Colt Cotner to make it 14-7.

Another TD pass – 11 yards from Lantz to Colton Teepe – midway through the second quarter gave UHS a 21-7 lead.

An Urbana interception late in the second quarter led to a NE touchdown run which cut the Hillclimbers’ lead to 21-14 at the half.

With eight minutes remaining in the third quarter, a touchdown run by the Jets evened the scored at 21-21.

An Urbana 32-yard touchdown pass from Lantz to Ronnie Weimer with three minutes remaining in the third quarter gave the home team a 28-21 lead.

UHS took a 36-21 lead midway through the fourth quarter on Preston Wisma’s 2-yard TD run.

A Northeastern touchdown pass two minutes later cut the deficit to 36-27.

Austin Hill’s seven-yard rushing TD with a minute left made it 44-27, and NE’s Garrett Chadwell returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to round out the scoring.

Lantz completed 14 of 28 pass attempts for 218 yards and had 2 interceptions.

The Hillclimbers host Fort Recovery this Friday night.
