Update on Urbana City Schools’ facilities project

Urbana City Schools is excited to share the progress of the Athletic Facilities Renovation Project following a successful follow-up community meeting held on June 17.

The meeting provided an in-depth review of the Project Master Plan, presented cost estimates for various options, and discussed potential funding strategies. At the meeting, community members actively participated in the discussion, asked questions, and offered further insights into the proposed renovation plans for Hillclimber Stadium, Boyce Street Complex, and the PK-8 site.

The comprehensive presentation was led by Superintendent Charles Thiel and Lead Architect Keith Hall from MSA Sport.

The goal of this process is to maintain transparency with the community to ensure that the project aligns with the needs and expectations of students and community members.

Key highlights of the meeting included:

● Master Plan Review: Detailed presentations of the refined renovation plans for each facility, showcasing improvements designed to enhance athletic experiences and community engagement.

● Cost Estimates: Presentation of estimated costs for the different renovation options. The cost range to update Hillclimber Stadium and Boyce Street is projected to be $28-$35 million, while updating Hillclimber Stadium and developing athletic facilities at the PK-8 Building site instead of continuing to use Boyce Street is estimated at $35-$41 million. These figures encompass all elements of the Master Plan, which may be executed in phases.

● Funding Options: Discussion of various funding strategies to support the renovation, including partnerships, community fundraising initiatives, permanent improvement funds, sponsorship opportunities, private donations, lease-purchase option agreements, capital funds from the new school project, and a new additional bond issue.

For those who were unable to attend the meeting, a recording is available on the Urbana City Schools YouTube channel, and the slideshow presentation can be accessed on the school’s website at urbanacityschools.org.

No final decisions have been made.

The Urbana Athletic Facilities Steering Committee will make a recommendation to the board of education on which option they believe should be pursued. The board will ultimately decide the next steps and direction of the project.
