Strickland uses TV ads to explain job losses, spending

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Democratic U.S. Sen. candidate Ted Strickland is using new television spots to counter claims about job and economic losses Ohio experienced while he was governor.

Strickland says in a seven-figure ad-buy that he led during the crisis of a national recession and used Ohio’s rainy-day fund to bolster education and maintain local police and fire services. Strickland notes in the 30-second spot that Ohio’s budget was balanced each of his four years as governor. That’s the case for all Ohio governors because of a constitutional requirement.

His rival, Republican Sen. Rob Portman, said in an Associated Press interview last week that outside groups’ attacks on Strickland’s handling of the economy are justified. He said Strickland’s lack of leadership caused Ohio to fall to 48th among 50 states in job creation.
