Lightning sparks fire at Ohio retirement center, 1 injured

MONROE, Ohio (AP) — A lightning strike started a fire at a retirement center in southwestern Ohio that forced more than 100 people from their homes.

Firefighters say one resident suffered minor injuries Saturday night at the Mount Pleasant Retirement Village in Monroe, north of Cincinnati.

City officials say lightning hit an apartment building at the complex early Saturday evening, starting a fire that spread through the attic. The fire caused the roof to collapse.

Firefighters had to help several residents to safety after they were trapped in their apartments.

In all, about 150 people were evacuated.

Several people assisted in clearing the apartments.

A woman who was driving by tells WLWT in Cincinnati that she ran into complex to help firefighters check the rooms and carry people down from the second floor.
