AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Following the death of a northeast Ohio county executive, a woman has stepped into the position for the first time in the county’s history.
Summit County Executive Russ Pry died suddenly a week ago and Ilene Shapiro took over the position.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports (http://bit.ly/2aMBsEL ) Shapiro is the first woman to hold the council’s top spot.
Shapiro had been urged by supporters to run to become Akron’s first female mayor. She says a “synergy” — such as a higher power — has brought her to an unexpected place.
Shapiro plans to run for the seat in November against former county councilman Bill Roemer.
Shapiro’s career includes holding prominent positions with FirstMerit Corp. and the Summa Foundation. She also started a beauty supply business and owned a consulting firm.
