WARREN, Ohio (AP) — An attorney for a 14-year-old Ohio girl charged in juvenile court with killing her father says the teen shot the man to protect her family from further abuse.
The girl entered a plea of “not true” to an aggravated murder charge Wednesday in Trumbull County Juvenile Court in northeast Ohio. She’s been in custody since the July 28 shooting of her 41-year-old father at the family’s home in Warren, about 55 miles southeast of Cleveland.
The Associated Press generally doesn’t identify juveniles involved in crimes.
The attorney says the girl shot her father in the head as he slept on a living room couch and her mother slept on the floor beside him. The mother called 911.
Prosecutors haven’t decided whether to seek adult charges against the teen.
