COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The father of a young girl whose decomposed body was found in a crib at their Ohio apartment will ask a judge for leniency at his sentencing hearing.
Thirty-five-year-old Eric Warfel will be sentenced on Friday on charges including corpse abuse, tampering with evidence and drug abuse.
Relatives and friends submitted about two dozen letters pleading for mercy. The letters describe Warfel as a gentle, protective father who was devastated when his 5-month-old daughter died in 2013, then lost his way and couldn’t cope when another daughter died last July.
A cable company worker found the body of 21-month-old Ember Warfel in a Medina (meh-DY’-nuh) apartment.
Officials couldn’t determine a cause of death because of decomposition. Warfel’s attorney has said Ember was born with severe medical problems.
The 2013 case was ruled a “sudden unexplained infant death.”
