DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A judge has sentenced a man to 15 years to life in prison for causing the death of his girlfriend’s 21-month-old son last year.
The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office says 23-year-old Dionte Evans, of Huber Heights, was sentenced Monday after a jury last month found him guilty of murder and other charges in the April 2015 death of Keyontae Ellis-Bell.
Police say Evans shared an apartment in the Dayton suburb with the boy and the boy’s mother, and Evans was left to care for the boy while the mother was at work.
Prosecutors say Keyontae’s mother called 911 to report her son wasn’t breathing. A coroner says he died from blunt-force injury.
Evans denied causing the child’s death. He will be eligible for parole after 15 years.
