Ohio sheriff’s deputy, 1 other shot; police seek gunman

DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in Ohio searched early Friday morning for a suspect in an apartment complex shooting that left two people wounded including a sheriff’s deputy.

The shooting happened Thursday night in Deerfield Township, about 25 miles northeast of Cincinnati.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office said a female deputy was shot while responding to report of a domestic situation at an apartment complex.

“The shooting was basically right after the deputy’s arrival,” said Lt. John Faine.

Authorities said the deputy was taken to a hospital and was “conscious and alert.” Another person also was shot and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The names of the two victims were not immediately released.

Brian Freedman, a resident of the apartment complex, told The Cincinnati Enquirer that he arrived home to find the area cordoned off.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen so many police officers in one place,” Freedman said.

Helicopters and K-9 units were called to the scene to assist in the search for the alleged gunman, later identified as 19-year-old Mohammed Abdou Laghaoui.

“He’s considered to be armed and very dangerous,” Faine said.

The Deerfield Township Fire Rescue sent out a tweet late Thursday warning of an active shooter situation. They advised people to stay inside and not open their doors to strangers.

“The sheriff has issued an order to shelter in place so basically just stay inside, keep your doors locked, if you do happen to see this person do not engage him in any way,” Faine said.
