University of Akron removes polytechnic phrase from logo

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Two days after the University of Akron’s president stepped down, the university has removed the phrase, “Ohio’s Polytechnic University,” from its logo, which had been part of the former president’s largely unsuccessful attempt to rebrand the school. reports ( ) university employees received an email on Thursday announcing the school’s brand standards “toolbox” had been updated. The logo remains “The University of Akron,” but the polytechnic designation was removed.

The polytechnic designation became part of the university’s identity after former president Scott Scarborough unveiled it in May 2015.

Scarborough said a polytechnic university teaches students how to apply science and the arts and use technology to “connect higher education to business and industry.”

Scarborough stepped down following a rocky tenure, including criticism over cuts and the rebrand attempt.
