Judge: Ohio man accused in 2013 stabbing death was insane

WARREN, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio man accused of stabbing a 71-year-old man to death and taking a Bible and Masonic ring from his home has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

A Trumbull County judge said Wednesday that 23-year-old Patrick Heltzel stabbed Milton Grumbling III to death in his Warren home in April 2013, but there’s overwhelming evidence that Heltzel had been suffering from psychotic delusional beliefs at the time, specifically schizophrenia.

WKBN-TV reports the judge says Heltzel thought Grumbling had sexually abused him in an alternative life and thought of himself as the last born child of Jesus. Heltzel also called himself an alien.

A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in which mental health experts will recommend whether Heltzel should be sent to a state mental hospital.
