DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — The Dayton VA Medical Center plans a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the debut of a new wheelchair-accessible ramp and sidewalk at its historic grotto.
The event Saturday afternoon is part of the annual Patriot Freedom Festival on the VA campus this weekend.
The ramp from the campus community living center and sidewalk along the grotto’s perimeter were a collaborative effort of Dayton VA engineers, the American Veterans Heritage Center, and The Home Depot store in Centerville.
The grotto was long a scenic sanctuary and visitor destination at the veterans’ center that dates to 1867. Civil War veterans helped beautify the grotto area, the Dayton Daily News recounted recently (http://bit.ly/1NRTKqq )
The grotto and surrounding gardens were revitalized and renovated in recent years.
