University of Akron says rebranding effort hasn’t caught on


AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The University of Akron’s experiment to rebrand itself “Ohio’s Polytechnic University” turned out to be a dud.

School officials say they’re now downplaying the tagline because it just wasn’t understood.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1qAXj9b ) that university president Scott Scarborough began pitching the slogan a year ago as a way to attract new students.

But many students, alumni and faculty rejected it.

A school spokesman said on Friday that the rebranded name hasn’t been used prominently for several months, but he says it won’t be abandoned entirely.

He says the school is sticking with “the University of Akron.”
