District apologizes after student is left asleep on bus

SPRINGBORO, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio school district apologized and promised swift action after an elementary school student was left asleep on a bus.

The Clearcreek Elementary student was found asleep Tuesday on a school bus inside the transportation lot after a parent called school officials wanting to know why the child hadn’t returned from school, said Springboro schools spokeswoman Karen DeRosa. The bus driver wasn’t aware the student didn’t get off at the correct stop, and the driver didn’t complete a required bus check at the end of the route, the Hamilton-Middletown Journal-News reported (http://bit.ly/1YFIGx1 ).

The student was found on the bus within about 30 minutes of it arriving at the transportation lot, DeRosa said.

Superintendent Todd Petrey said in an email to parents that the safety of the students is their highest priority and officials will work to regain their trust.

“This is absolutely unacceptable and I apologize on behalf of Springboro Schools,” Petrey said. “There will be swift action. We will not only review what happened here today, but we will review our training and compliance with protocol for our drivers.”

The route has a new driver and an investigation is underway, DeRosa said.
