Group launches voter registration push in Ohio ahead of fall

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A progressive nonprofit group says it plans to register 150,000 voters in swing state Ohio and focus on getting them to the polls this fall.

Leaders with the Ohio Organizing Collaborative say they plan to have about 100 paid canvassers registering voters or ensuring that voter registrations are up to date ahead of the presidential election. The effort is mostly focused on urban areas and neighborhoods around the state where eligible voters have not registered.

The coalition of faith-based organizations, labor unions and others says it also wants to engage new voters on issues affecting their communities and will be asking them about their interests.

The group’s organizers say they also plan to remind voters about the impact local races have on their lives.

Ohio has more than 7.5 million registered voters.
