Jury recommends life sentence for man convicted in slayings

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio jury has recommended that a man convicted in the fatal shootings of his father and his two teenage children during a home invasion robbery on New Year’s Eve 2013 be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Summit County jurors made the recommendation on Thursday, sparing 33-year-old Eric Hendon of the death penalty. The Akron man will be sentenced on May 4 but cannot receive the death penalty.

Hendon was convicted earlier this month of aggravated murder, attempted murder and related offenses. Authorities say he shot 42-year-old John Kohler and Kohler’s 18-year-old stepdaughter and 14-year-old son in the head at their Barberton home. Kohler’s girlfriend was shot in the head but survived.

Authorities say the shootings occurred during an attempted marijuana theft.
