Forecasters confirm tornado hit New Jersey during storm

WHITE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Weather forecasters have confirmed a tornado touched down in New Jersey.

The National Weather Service says a tornado with 75 mph winds was confirmed near White Township on Thursday.

Tom Smith says he saw a twisting black cloud sweep across his Warren County farm before his barn collapsed.

The weather service says the barn and a residence were damaged but no one was injured.

About 3,000 homes and businesses were without electricity Friday after storms knocked out service to about 12,000 customers.

The storms knocked down trees in front of Republican Gov. Chris Christie’s Mendham Township home. Downed trees and power lines are reported around the state.
