SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) — More than 1,000 people have kicked off the summer season on the Jersey shore with a free concert on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights.
Hoboken resident Diana Volaric ditched work and came to the shore. She was rewarded by an autograph from rock star Bret Michaels.
She’s excited about the summer season, which she plans to spend at a Seaside Heights rental.
The concert Friday is accompanied by quirky rituals in which mayors in various beach towns “unlock” the ocean for the season. In Ocean City, businesspeople march into the water in full boardroom regalia.
Michaels was on the Seaside Heights beach early Friday playing hits from the hair metal band Poison.
State tourism officials say advance bookings for this summer are strong, helped by low gasoline prices.
