Guatemalan congress votes to strip justice of immunity

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemala’s congress has stripped immunity from a supreme court justice accused of taking a bribe to resolve a matter in favor of a port company.

Lawmaker Leonel Lira said Tuesday that the decision to make Justice Douglas Charchal subject to prosecution passed easily, with 136 in favor, none in opposition and 22 absent.

Prosecutors alleged in April that Charchal received an armored Range Rover in exchange for ruling that the company Terminal de Contenedores Quetzal did not have to pay a construction license.

Charchal has denied the allegation and requested that the supreme court grant him leave.
