MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer working undercover in southern Alabama is recovering from surgery after he was shot during a gun battle that also left a suspect wounded.
Mobile Police Department spokesman Terence Perkins tells The Associated Press the officer was in plainclothes and part of an undercover narcotics operation when a suspect armed with a handgun opened fire about 3 a.m. Friday.
Perkins says officers encountered the man on a motorcycle moments before he laid the bike down and then began shooting at them. Perkins said officers at the scene returned fire, wounding the suspect. He said the suspect was in critical condition at a hospital.
Perkins says the officer was shot twice and underwent surgery.
The races of the officers and suspect were not immediately available.
