Urbana University received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the second time in program history.

The Blue Knights posted an impressive 3.54 cumulative team grade-point average in 2015-16 under first-year head coach Tim Balice.

The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale. The Blue Knights previously won the Team Academic Award after the 2009-10 academic year.

“Give credit to our student-athletes and Pierre Lucien over at the Academic Success Center,” Balice said. “When I first got on campus, we already had a great bunch of academically-minded young women here at Urbana. My staff and I constantly talk about what it means to not compete against your opponent but with yourself. I simply challenged them to change their best and invest in doing it the right way; they answered accordingly.”

He continued, “I think it is also critical to note that since Pierre has arrived on campus he has also helped us evolve in so many facets that impact success; not just studying. He has, and continues, to impress me with his commitment to building long-term habits of success for our student-athletes.”

UU will open the 2016 season Sept. 2-3 at the Cavalier Classic, hosted by Walsh in North Canton, Ohio.
