Cardinal hired as Cardinals’ football coach

NORTH LEWISBURG – It seems like a perfect fit.

The Triad board of education hired Joe Cardinal to coach the Cardinals’ football team during its meeting this week.

Cardinal, who replaces longtime coach Payton Printz, comes to the Cardinals from Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tenn., where he was co-defensive coordinator from 2013-15.

Ravenwood won a big-school state championship last season and was state runner-up in 2014.

Cardinal graduated from Sebring (Ohio) McKinley High School in 2000 and later graduated from Ohio University.

Cardinal noted of his coaching philosophy: “I believe in delegation and identifying coach responsibility vs. player responsibility. My program will be built on tenets of honesty, trust, accountability, decision-making and will involve attention to ‘off the field’ academics, responsible social behavior, practice tempo and efficiency, and motivated training and conditioning. My ‘on-field’ philosophy is grounded in aggressiveness, great defense, taking care of the football, managing the game, red zone efficiency and flawless special teams play.”

Cardinal was also an assistant coach at Hillsboro (2008) and Clermont Batavia (2005-06).

He will teach social studies at Triad.
