WL-S boys fifth at Buck Creek Invite

SPRINGFIELD – The West Liberty-Salem boys cross country team finished 5th at the Buck Creek Invitational on Saturday.

The Tigers were led by Joey Adams (4th, 16:37), Michael Conley (20th, 17:30), Ross Kelley (33rd, 17:52), Nick Williams (38th, 18:04) and Charlie Williams (56th, 18:37). Isaac Smith, Jordan Lewis, Bryan Woods, James Loffing, Andrew Landis, Konner Smith, Tyler Louden, Zavier Esch and Kannon Stillings also competed.

“I’m truly excited about what the team can accomplish in the next five weeks when we put the whole puzzle together,” WL-S Coach Mike Louden said.

The West Liberty-Salem girls cross country team place 8th out of 20 teams at the Buck Creek Invitational.

The Tigers were led by Reghan Bieleski (13th, 19:54), Caylee Karg (32nd, 21:20), Jenna Magnuson (57th, 22:15), Leah Cole (64th, 22:27) and Lauren Fowler (68th, 22:35). Sarah Painter, Taylor Henault, Anna Louden, Madison Woodruff and Katie Hartsel also ran.

“Overall, this was the best team race we’ve had all season. We responded well to the challenge of tough competition, including three state-ranked teams and several D-1 schools,” WL-S Coach Ann Vogel said. “We have some battle-rhythm right now, and after facing some adversity with injuries and illness, it’s starting to come together for us.”

WL-S competes at the Anna Rocket Invitational this Saturday.

WL-S girls win

West Liberty-Salem defeated Anna, 4-0, in non-league girls soccer on Saturday.

Madison Bender, Gabby Hollar, Lily Yoder and Madison Oelker each scored. Annika Wolfe, Dierdre McGill and Oelker recorded assists and Paige Shafer had 6 saves.

The Tigers play at Greeneview on Thursday.

Paulsen advances

Urbana’s Maggie Paulsen shot a 90 at the Division II sectional golf tournament held at Xenia WGC Golf Course last week and tied for the fourth individual qualifying spot. She’ll compete at Pipestone Golf Course on Wednesday in the district tournament.

Junior high cross country

The WL-S junior high girls won the Buck Creek Invitational. Katelyn Stapleton (1st, 12:34), Grace Adams (2nd, 12:50) and Madison Bahan (4th, 12:58) paced the Tigers. Lydie Moell, Payton Umphries, Savannah Weaver, Aaliyah Speert, Tory Pawelko, Sailor Levan, Mikaela Holbridge, Lili Davis and Jessie Boy each competed.

The boys were sixth. Noah Smith (2nd, 11:39), Gavin Harrison (27th, 13:17) and Cade Clerico (30th, 13:22) paced the Tigers. Hayden Kennedy, Ian Maurice and Cody Matthews-Moore each ran.

Junior high football

WL-S defeated Mechanicsburg, 14-12.

Zayne Reed had two rushing touchdowns for the Tigers while Ethan Cole kicked 2 extra points.

On defense, Isaac Lee had a sack and a blocked punt. Eli McGill also helped the defense with a sack and a fumble recovery.

The Tigers are 5-0 on the season and will host Springfield Catholic Central on Thursday.

Postal Open is Oct. 12

The Annual Postal Golf Open will be held on Monday, Oct. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Urbana Country Club.
