Holiday racing at Shady Bowl

DeGRAFF – Local stock car racing fans will have a chance to see two big days of racing as Shady Bowl Speedway will celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with action on both Saturday and Sunday.

The action kicks off Saturday when the ARCA Truck Series will tackle the oval as they run the Phoenix Management Group 100.

The Toledo-based group travels the Midwest racing on both pavement and dirt tracks. The current points leader is Shawn Szep from Marysville. Szep has dominated the three events thus far. He has posted two wins and a second-place finish in his Technicom Electric backed truck. He has also been fast qualifier at each event. Szep has also competed at Shady Bowl in a Legends car.

Craig Herron of North Lewisburg serves as the crew chief. Herron held the same position in 2009 on the family-owned late model driven by his brother Nathan. The team set records that will probably never be broken. They posted 16 wins out of 18 starts. The most remarkable fact was that they won 14 in a row. The Pure Stocks and Compacts will also be racing, along with the spectator drag races.

The Sunday night program will feature the Shady Bowl Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stocks, Tuners, Compacts and spectator drags. BM Works will sponsor the Sunday Compact feature. The race will pay $300 to win, with $50 to start. All races except the Sunday night Compact event will be points races. Spectator drag drivers must register each night before 7 p.m.

Racing both nights will start at 7 p.m. Camping, as usual, is free for the weekend.

Shady Bowl Speedway will feature a two-day ticket of events this weekend to celebrate Independence Day.
