MECHANICSBURG – Kaleb Romero picked up right where he left off last season as the junior quarterback led Mechanicsburg to a 43-8 win over West Jefferson in a non-league football season opener Friday night.

West Jeff jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, but the Indians responded in a big way.

Romero in the second quarter alone ran for two touchdowns and threw for another pair to lead the Indians to a 29-8 halftime lead.

“Kaleb is quite a duel threat,” said Mechanicsburg Coach Kurt Forrest. “People know he can run, but he has improved as a passer as well.”

Phil Cook had two TD receptions in the second quarter and added a pair of rushing touchdowns in the third period to activate the continuous clock.

“Our running game opens some things up,” said Forrest.

Cook recorded 211 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns on just 18 touches while Romero had 309 yards of total offense as the Indians posted their first victory over West Jefferson since 2008.

Mechanicsburg hosts Fairbanks next Friday night.
