It’s time to work together

It’s time we kick drug companies and insurance lobbyists out of the healthcare conversation, listen to the American people, and finally work together to lower prices and make healthcare work better for everyone.

Last week, we witnessed once again that partisan politics is no match for the activism of the American people.

Because thousands of Ohioans stopped by my office, wrote letters, made calls, and shared their stories, we were able to stop a bill that would have raised premiums and kicked millions of Americans off of their health insurance.

I agree with Governor Kasich: the Affordable Care Act needs work. We’ve got to do more to bring down costs and stabilize the insurance market; but we can only make real progress if Republicans and Democrats come together to find a solution.

Just last week, we saw how effective and efficient Congress can be when both parties work together.

The Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee voted to advance my bipartisan bill that would ensure student veterans who’ve been defrauded by for-profit colleges aren’t cheated out of their G.I. benefits. The bill is now up for a full Senate vote.

This is just one example of the real solutions Republicans and Democrats can come up with when we work together.

Also last week, in a nearly unanimous agreement, Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate passed a sanctions package that will hold Iran, Russia, and North Korea accountable. We sent a clear message that we will not tolerate Russia’s attacks on our democracy and North Korea’s nuclear missile testing and relentless human rights abuses that took the life of Otto Warmbier.

Those sanctions are now law.

So, it’s possible for Republican and Democrats to find common ground and workable solutions. We’ve done it before, and we can do it again.

It’s time we roll up our sleeves and work together to fix the problems that are keeping Americans up at night, from wages that are too low to prescription drug costs that are too high.
