The Champaign County Preservation Alliance (CCPA) held its 26th annual meeting at the Urbana Country Club on Tuesday, July 18. The Alliance President, Dusty Hurst, recognized the GrandWorks Foundation as the “Champaign County Preservationist of the Year” for their work in revitalizing the Gloria Theater which has brought back cinema and theater to Champaign County.

The CCPA also recognized and rewarded Beverly Swisher as their “Volunteer of the Year.” Bev Swisher has been a long time supporter of the annual Home and Garden Tour and since 2013, she has organized the nearly 300 volunteers for each tour.

Staci Weller of GrandWorks Foundation and Beverly Swisher were present to receive their awards.

The CCPA Board of Trustees presented an annual report outlining work of the Alliance. Over the past year the CCPA has been very active fostering preservation of historic buildings, revitalization of downtowns and neighborhoods and promoting cultural tourism in Champaign County. The 3rd annual Urban Loft tours highlighted city living and downtown revitalization. Last month the Alliance hosted the 25th annual Home and Garden Tour which brought 1000 visitors to the County.

All moneys generated by the tours are returned to the community. At the meeting it was reported that Commercial grants totaling $6,000 for 2017 have been awarded to preserve the historic facades and streetscapes at 100-106 S. Main Street, 20 Monument Square, 114-116 Scioto Street, and 115 Locust Street in Urbana. Additional funds are preserving and protecting the former Second Baptist Church in Mechanicsburg.

A Residential Grant for $1,000 was awarded to help tuck point and paint 569 S. Main Street in Urbana. And the CCPA is happy to have helped finance and create the recently dedicated Legacy Park in downtown Urbana.

The members of the CCPA elected the following officers for the next year: Robert Polllock (Urbana) President; Dusty Hurst (Mechanicsburg) Vice President; Suzanne McCoy (Union Twp) Secretary; and Cathy Harris (Urbana) Treasurer.

The upcoming events hosted by the CCPA are: Saturday November 4, 2017, Urban Loft Tour in Urbana; Sunday November 5, 2017, Historic Train Trip. More information will be available in August.

The Champaign County Preservation Alliance is a private not-for-profit, all volunteer organization created to encourage and promote historic preservation and creative reuse of existing places and structures in Champaign County.
