County jobless rate decreased in April

Champaign County’s jobless rate continued decreasing in April, according to information released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The county’s jobless rate was 3.5 percent in April, down from 4.0 percent in March.

In April the number of unemployed people decreased by 100 to 700 while the number of employed people increased by 200 to 19,300.

The county’s jobless rate in April 2016 was 4.0 percent with 19,200 employed people and and 800 unemployed people.

Champaign County was one of 19 counties in the state with an unemployment rate of 3.5 percent or lower in April.

Logan County’s jobless rate was 3.5 percent in April.

Mercer County had the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 2.5 percent while Monroe County had the highest at 7.6 percent.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.0 percent in April, down from 5.1 percent in March. Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment decreased 5,700 over the month, from a revised 5,518,500 in March to 5,512,800 in April.

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in April was 288,000, down 5,000 from 293,000 in March. The number of unemployed has increased by 5,000 in the past 12 months from 283,000. The April unemployment rate for Ohio, at 5.0 percent, did not change from April 2016.

The U.S. unemployment rate for April was 4.4 percent, 0.1 percentage point lower than in March, and 0.6 percentage point lower than in April 2016.
