NORTH LEWISBURG – A brief update on negotiations for law enforcement services in the village was provided during Tuesday’s regular meeting.

Deputies from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office were removed from North Lewisburg at the beginning of the year after the two parties could not reach a contract agreement for services.

On Tuesday, Mayor Cheryl Hollingsworth said the village has met several times with legal counsel who are preparing contracts. She added the village is also looking at alternatives for policing.

In the event of an emergency, Hollingsworth advised residents to call 911 because they as taxpayers are covered by the sheriff’s office.

The non-emergency number to reach dispatch is 937-653-3409 and Hollingsworth advised the See Something Say Something number is 937-210-4489.

OPWC project

Village Administrator Andy Yoder stated the village submitted a project to the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) for street paving. Yoder said the project was submitted to the Small Governments Program for consideration.

According to the OPWC website, the Small Government Commission provides grants and loans to villages and townships with populations in unincorporated areas of less than 5,000 in population.

Yoder said the village should know if they are approved by the middle of May. He added the project would then be put out to bid and paving work would potentially start in August or September.

On a separate topic, Yoder provided council with an update on street lights. He said the village renewed its contract with Miami Valley Lighting last summer and recently received information on the possibility to change high pressure sodium lights to LED.

No action was taken on this subject.

EPA sample

Water/wastewater superintendent Trevor Clark stated the village is working with the EPA for new lead and copper mapping and monitoring regulations. He asked residents who live in a home that had copper plumbing installed between 1982 and 1987 to let him know.

“Doesn’t mean you got to change your plumbing, doesn’t mean you got to do anything it just would mean I’d like to be able to sample your house in my sequence with the EPA and they like those type of sample sites,” Clark said.

In other action:

•Council approved a resolution allowing for Yoder to sit in place of Hollingsworth on the Champaign County Health District Board and Advisory Council.

•Council authorized the sale of village property for internet sales to allow Yoder to sell an old village vehicle.

•Council passed an ordinance adopting the 2017 Ohio Basic Code.

•Council was informed of a pizza sampler fundraiser Cardinal’s Pizza is holding 4-9 p.m. Feb. 27. The proceeds benefit the Drew Mason Memorial Scholarship.
