SPRINGFIELD – An Urbana man charged with sexually assaulting a developmentally disabled adult appeared in court Tuesday.

Fred T. Markel, 59, of 5920 Terre Haute Road, pleaded not guilty to rape and gross sexual imposition in the Clark County Municipal Court, according to the court’s website.

A probable cause affidavit on the court’s website, on Sept. 17, 2016, a report was filed with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office concerning Markel engaging in sexual conduct with a developmentally disabled adult victim.

While speaking with law enforcement in November, the victim stated Markel made her and her boyfriend have sex in front of him at their residence in Clark County. On another occasion, Markel reportedly picked the victim up at her residence and drove her to his residence where he engaged in sexual intercourse with her.

The victim stated these incidents happened during the summer of 2016.

Speaking with law enforcement in December, Markel reportedly denied making the victim have sex in front of him, saying he was instructing the victim’s boyfriend on a sexual position. He also admitted at least two occasions where he picked up the victim, took her to his residence and engaged in sexual intercourse.

Markel’s bond was established at $50,000, according to the court’s website.
