Christmas spirit

On Aug. 12, the Mechanicsburg Eagles and corporate sponsor CRSI hosted a Bluegrass Festival benefiting the Champaign County Sheriff Office, FOP Lodge 46, for their annual Children’s Christmas Fund. The event was called “Wipe Out A Blue Christmas” and was a huge success. The proceeds will assist FOP Lodge 46 to provide Christmas to less fortunate children in Champaign County.

Champaign County Sheriff’s Deputies, represented by FOP Lodge 46 started the Christmas program in 2014, helping families within Champaign County. This program has grown since then. Deputies obtain a list of families and then purchase gifts for each family. Deputies, members of the Eagles and employees at CRSI will help wrap these gifts. On a date in December, deputies will deliver the presents to families along with a special guest, Santa Claus, who will ride along in a patrol vehicle, leaving his sleigh parked for the evening.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, “Every day, our deputies come into contact with people in the community who are struggling during these difficult economic times. Christmas is a time for celebration, but some families are struggling just to put food on the table, let alone to provide presents for their children. That is why we try to make a difference as public servants.”

The Mechanicsburg Eagles along with corporate sponsors CRSI and Urbana Orbis Corporation stepped forward to help, enabling the sheriff’s office to expand its efforts in helping the less fortunate families in the Champaign County area.

Donation barrels can be found at the Mechanicsburg Eagles, located at 2306 Eagle Road, Woodstock; CRSI, located at 1150 Scioto St., Urbana; and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, located at 308 Miami St., Urbana.

Anyone interested in helping the cause can purchase a new toy and drop off, unwrapped, at one of the locations.
