Champaign County EMA seeks new director

The Champaign County Emergency Management Executive Board is looking to fill the Director of Emergency Management Agency/Office of Homeland Security following an upcoming vacancy.

Kip Michael, the current EMA director, submitted a resignation letter to the executive board dated Nov. 7 stating his last day as the director will be on Dec. 30.

“I appreciate the experience and the opportunity to serve as your county EMA director,” Michael stated in the letter. “I feel it is time for me to explore other opportunities and adventures. Thank you all very much for the support you have given me these past two years.”

Michael has served as the EMA director since June 2015. His salary in the director position was $32,000 annually according to information obtained from the Champaign County Auditor’s Office.

In his resignation letter, Michael recommends County EMA Deputy Director Mark Randall as his successor.

In a job opening listing, the county executive board states the director position is responsible for coordinating the county’s mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery to situations such as natural disasters, acts of terror and infrastructure failures while also promoting the collaboration of public, private and not-for profit organizations to minimize disruption to agency operations and services during a major event.

Some of the minimum qualifications for the position include a two year degree in emergency management, business, criminal justice or fire science is preferred, 10 years of experience in the field of emergency services, five years of supervisory experience in the field of emergency services, general knowledge of emergency management best practices and general knowledge and experience using the National Incident Management System and the Incident Command System.
