A driver sustained minor injuries after her vehicle collided with a semi truck Thursday morning.

According to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, the Champaign County Wide Communication Center received a 911 call at 10:30 a.m. in reference to a possible injury crash involving a semi truck and car occurring at 11312 state Route 4.

Mechanicsburg Fire and EMS along with the Urbana Fire Division, Urbana Fire Hazardous Materials Unit, and sheriff deputies responded to the location.

The crash investigation revealed a 2015 International semi truck and trailer driven by Daniel Gibson from Indiana was traveling southbound on state Route 4. A 2005 green Chevrolet Equinox driven by Donna Hampton, 49, from Indiana was traveling northbound on state Route 4.

Hampton advised that she fell asleep at the wheel crossing into the southbound lane of travel striking the semi.

She was transported by Mechanicsburg EMS to Springfield Regional Hospital with minor injuries while the driver of the semi was uninjured.

The crash caused a rupture of the semi’s fuel tanks. Mechanicsburg Fire, Urbana Hazardous Materials Unit assisted by Maine’s Towing and Recovery Rescue Unit and the Ohio Department of Transportation worked on cleaning up the semi’s ruptured fuel tanks and clean up of the expelled diesel fuel on the roadway and grass area.

State Route 4 was completely closed for approximately two and a half hours during this cleanup. The crash remained under investigation as of Thursday afternoon.
