WEST LIBERTY – An early morning blaze from the weekend is under investigation by local law enforcement.

West Liberty Fire Chief Conrad Hostetler said Monday that the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and West Liberty Police Department are investigating an arson that occurred Sunday at 114 S. Detroit St.

Hostetler said the Fire Department was dispatched around 3 a.m. on a report of a small fire inside the building. When crews arrived, Hostetler said, the whole building was lit up.

Hostetler said that prior to fire a neighbor saw someone enter and exit the building. The neighbor contacted police who arrived at the location after the person left the building. While speaking with the neighbor, police observed a fire had started.

The building was not occupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The fire department remained on the scene until around 7:30 a.m.

Hostetler said the building, which was storing scrap tires, is a total loss but no damage estimate was available as of Monday afternoon. He added four nearby buildings sustained exposure damage because of the fire and local internet service providers’ fiber optic cables were also damaged.

Hostetler asks anyone with information about the fire to contact the Logan County Sheriff’s Office at 937-592-5731.
