The Alicia Titus Memorial Peace Run 5K and 1 Mile Walk will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Student Center at Urbana University.

The Walk/Run for Peace is a family event with live music, lots of post-race refreshments, door prizes, raffle items, face painting and other children’s peace-building activities.

The Alicia Titus Memorial Peace Fund was developed in fall 2001 to commemorate Alicia Nicole Titus, a longtime member of the community and a graduate of Graham High School and Miami University.

“She was a flight attendant on United Flight 175 on Sept. 11, 2001. Alicia was deeply involved in the community and a consummate peacemaker in all she did. She totally opposed violence, hatred, prejudice, killing or any unkind act against another living thing. Her true nature and human existence were totally opposite of the evil forces that took her life,” said her father, John, at her memorial service.

The fund was established by the Titus family and church friends to carry out the legacy and spirit of Alicia’s life by sponsoring programs for the university and the community that promote and support a culture of peace.

The course starts and finishes at the Student Center and passes through Monument Square and Freedom Grove. To honor first responders, the team with the most participants will be awarded a cross made from the steel beams of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office won this traveling award at the last Run in 2014.
