WOODSTOCK – A two-vehicle crash on the county’s east side killed a West Jefferson woman and caused multiple injuries Saturday evening. Veronica L. Rains, age 59, died at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton after being transported there by CareFlight, according to information released by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday afternoon.

Sheriff’s officials were not able to reach next of kin for Rains until Tuesday despite diligent efforts to do so. The sheriff’s office is urging people to sign up for the Next of Kin Registry at the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles in order to assist law enforcement in locating family members of deceased crash victims as quickly as possible.

According to the sheriff’s office, on Saturday at 7:25 p.m. Champaign Countywide Communication Center received a 911 call in reference to a two-vehicle auto accident with serious injuries which occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 36 at State Route 559. Rains was driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla and had been traveling northbound on State Route 559 when she failed to stop at the stop sign. A 2011 Gray Ford Fusion was traveling west bound on U.S. Highway 36 and struck the Toyota. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage. The driver was the only occupant in the Toyota Corolla. Three persons from the Ford Fusion were transported to Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana for treatment and were released. Those persons were identified Tuesday afternoon as driver Philip G. Mowery, age 39 from Middletown, passenger Ashley N. Boley, age 23 from Middletown, and a 19-month-old child who was also injured, but treated and released. The toddler was not identified by name.
