Triad board approves union contract

NORTH LEWISBURG – Triad Local Schools board approved a three-year contract with its Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local 693 union Thursday.

The board also approved Memorandums of Understanding for both the teachers union and OAPSE.

The new OAPSE contract provides a 1.5 percent wage increase for each of the three years, Superintendent Chris Piper said. It is in effect from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2019. The raise is the same as the teachers union contract previously approved.

The board approved a Memorandum of Understanding between the board and the teachers union related to non-posting of high school summer school positions. Piper said this is for this summer only, because there is an “immediate need for high school summer school teachers, to get students to finish their work so they can graduate.”

The OAPSE Memorandum of Understanding involves health insurance for existing staff who work less than 30 hours a week. The district previously paid for health insurance for these employees; under the new contract it will not do so for new employees who work less than 30 hours. The MOU is needed to continue providing health insurance for employees under the previous contract who worked less than 30 hours so they will continue to have their health insurance funded by the district, Piper said.

Piper said placing gifted students in regular classrooms, similar to how special education students now are in regular classrooms, is being considered. He said this would better serve gifted students. He added that such classes would have both a traditional and gifted teacher in the room.
