Urbana North Elementary and Urbana Junior High School received awards from the state for improvements in student achievement on the 2015 school report cards.

North Elementary received the All A Award, and Urbana Junior High School received the Momentum Award from the Ohio Department of Education for their 2014-15 school report card progress. The All A Award is for earning straight A’s on the report card. The Momentum Award is for exceeding student growth for the year, according to an education department press release.

“Earning straight A’s is no easy task, and these schools deserve our praise,” state Board of Education President Tom Gunlock said. This is the first year of the awards.

“Urbana North was the only All A Award school recognized in Champaign, Clark and Logan counties. The same holds true for Urbana Junior High with the Momentum Award,” Urbana City Schools Superintendent Charles Thiel said. “Both are great recognition for the hard work of our staff and students.”

Urbana Junior High Principal Joanne Petty credited staff and students for the award: “This accomplishment reflects the hard work, time and effort from our Urbana Junior High staff and students. The staff strives to create a strong, positive learning environment for all students.”

Two districts and 46 schools received the All A Award, and 53 districts and 165 schools received the Momentum Award, according to the education department.
