Urbana City Council, during its 7 p.m. meeting today in municipal court chambers, will hear the first readings of three separate resolutions pertaining to the anticipated repair of portions of U.S. Route 36, state Route 29 and state Route 54.
The first resolution to be read calls for preliminary approval between the city and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for pavement overlay of U.S. Route 36 from the city’s eastern corporation limit to Ludlow Road.
As for the opposite side of U.S. Route 36, another resolution being presented to council would authorize preliminary approval between the city and ODOT for pavement overlay of U.S. Route 36 from the county line between Champaign and Miami counties to the western corporation limit of Urbana. The resolution also mentions pavement overlay of state Route 29 from the city’s eastern corporation limit to state Route 56.
Also to be heard by council on first reading only is a resolution authorizing the preliminary approval between the city and ODOT for a fine graded polymer pavement overlay of state Route 54 from Hickory Grove Road to the city’s southern corporation limit.
During the meeting, council will also be asked to suspend the three-readings rule and pass on first reading only the following pieces of legislation:
•An ordinance expressing the city’s intent to negotiate jointly with other cities in the region on one schedule under which electric light services shall be furnished for the purpose of street lighting.
•A resolution authoring the director of administration and/or fire chief to accept, on behalf of the city, the Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
In other business:
•The administration will recommend council sign off on a purchase order in the amount of $84,647.02 to Stryker for two Power-PRO ambulance cots and two Power-LOAD systems.
•An ordinance seeking to amend the city’s codified ordinances to add language prohibiting the use of indoor furniture in an outdoor environment will undergo a second reading, as will an ordinance that would change the city’s maximum penalty for a minor misdemeanor from $50 to $150, the maximum fine allowed for such offense under Ohio Revised Code.
•Council will hear the second reading of an ordinance allowing the director of administration to submit a request to the Champaign County Board of Revisions to transfer 26 parcels (former Q3 JMC property) to the city in order to facilitate reutilization of nonproductive land pursuant to Ohio Revised Code.
The city continues to express its desire to acquire the property in question, which is headed to a sheriff’s sale on Wednesday. Director of Administration Kerry Brugger said at the Aug. 18 council meeting that the city will not be bidding on the property and will only accept it if the board of revision votes to waive the tax liability if no bids are received for the property.
