City man pleads guilty to drug trafficking

A man charged with drug possession charges stemming from a drug raid earlier this year pleaded guilty Monday.

John P. Long, 28, pleaded guilty to felony charges of possession of heroin, possession of drugs and trafficking in drugs in addition to misdemeanor charges of possessing drug abuse instruments and endangering children.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 16.

On Feb. 25, the Urbana Police Division conducted a raid at 986 Terry Lane, the apartment of Long and Heidi Long. Police recovered evidence of heroin, Suboxone, various prescription pills, marijuana and various drug paraphernalia.

The grand jury indictment states the possession of drugs charge stems from Mr. Long possessing Suboxone.

The trafficking in drugs charge stems from him reportedly selling or offering to sell Suboxone to an individual. The trafficking charge also hold a specification for forfeiture of a cell phone in a drug case.

The grand jury indictment also notes he was previously convicted of or pleaded guilty to violations in drug abuse cases from 2010 and 2011.

Mr. Long faces maximum consecutive sentences of three years in prison with a $7,500 fine.

Also during Monday’s hearing, a request to modify Mr. Long’s bond was denied. His bond was previously set at $20,000.

Mr. Long’s attorney, Nathan Pieri, asked the court if Mr. Long could be placed on electronic monitoring to which Judge Nick Selvaggio said the court had no ankle monitors as they were deprived of a unit that was damaged by a defendant in another case.

Ms. Long was indicted last month on two counts of possession of drugs and one count each of possession of heroin, possession of dangerous drugs, possessing drug abuse instruments, illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, illegal use or possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia and endangering children.

A motion to modify Ms. Long’s bond was denied according to a journal entry filed on April 12.

She is scheduled to appear in court for a final pretrial conference on Wednesday.
