Aspiring chefs compete

Urbana City Schools and Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools middle schoolers got an education in cooking through the annual Future Chef competition, put on by Sodexo School Services.

Sodexo provides food services for both districts.

Fourth and fifth graders from Mechanicsburg held their competition March 3. Urbana held its competition March 10.

Mechanicsburg’s grand prize winner was Bailey Stapleton for her breakfast tortilla recipe, and Urbana’s grand prize winner was Katie Crabill for her peanut butter banana and berry toast recipe. Both winners received a grand prize basket full of cooking tools, cook books, a Fitbit, and other prizes. The competition asked students to create healthy breakfast recipes, which were judged on how health-conscious they were, how kid-friendly the preparation, and the table presentation.

This was the third year for Mechanicsburg’s competition, and the fourth year for Urbana’s.

Crabill moved into the top 40 at the regional competition.
