Village council, citizens discuss curfew

By Nick Walton -

ST. PARIS – Village council and residents discussed establishing a curfew following reported issues in the village.

The discussion over a curfew was held during a work session prior to the April 4 meeting.

Mayor Joe Reneer said the purpose of the meeting was to come up with a general consensus on the issue noting there had been thefts from parked vehicles in town, broken car windows and license plates stolen. Residents also expressed concern about groups of minors walking the streets at night.

While an ordinance to establish a curfew was read, no action was taken to change the curfew.

Council was informed of citizens looking to form a community watch program. The organization’s first meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the municipal building.

During the regular meeting, council agreed to hold a work session at 6:30 p.m. prior to the April 18 meeting. The action was taken during the public comments portion of the meeting after residents asked about raising money for the village police for better training, resources and more patrols.

Council approves mosquito spraying

After tabling action on mosquito spraying during the March 21 meeting, council agreed to hire Able Pest Control instead of training village employees.

The action occurred after council heard a presentation from Jeff Crawford of Able Pest Control.

The company will spray 11 times for $5,225. The action was approved 4-2 with council members Terry Ervin II and Tyler Adkins voting against the motion.

In other action:

•Council approved a resolution to establish a capitalization threshold for assets belonging to the village. The resolution establishes a $35,000 minimum threshold for the village’s capital assets as required by law.

•Council approved a contract between the village and Evergreen Cemetery for grave digging services. The fee will remain $150 for each grave dug.

•During mayor’s notes, Reneer said garage sale day will be held on June 18 and flowers are going to be planted in the town planters around town on May 13.
