A driver pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges related to a fatal vehicle crash from last summer.

A Champaign County grand jury indicted Matthew G. King, 21, of 10590 County Road 41, West Liberty, Wednesday on two counts each of aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, vehicular assault and one count of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them.

According to a press release from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, the charges are in reference to a fatal crash that occurred on June 14, 2015. The crash occurred at 2:57 a.m. involving a single vehicle traveling westbound on state Route 296 that went off the right side of the roadway, striking an embankment and ejecting all three occupants.

The three occupants who were injured included King, Mayci Powell and Mackenzee R. Hartley.

Hartley, of Mechanicsburg, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, via CareFlight before being flown to Ohio State University Hospital where she died as a result of her injuries that evening.

King was taken into custody Wednesday evening and transported to the Tri-County Regional Jail, Mechanicsburg.

During Thursday’s arraignment hearing, King’s bond was established at $20,000. If bond is posted, he was ordered not to drive any vehicle or consume any alcohol.

A scheduling conference in the case is scheduled for April 19.
