Park District offers history tour, stargazing and more

SPRINGFIELD – The Clark County Park District is offering several programs/events this month. To register for any of these programs, call the district office at 937-882-6000 or register at www.clarkcountyparks.org under Program Registration.

*Fireside History Chat, Ohio Hopewell Earthworks, Tuesday, April 12

Davidson Interpretive Center

Ohio is home to the most spectacular concentration of ancient earthworks in the world. They are so complex and extensive that Fort Ancient, the Newark Earthworks, Mound City, and four other sites in Ross County have been nominated for World Heritage status with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Aaron Rourke, board member of Heartland Earthwork Conservancy and president of Rivers Unlimited, will be the presenter. Preregistration is limited to 40 participants.

*Stargaze, Friday, April 15, 9-11 p.m.

Davidson Interpretive Center

Join us for an evening under the stars as we explore the mysteries of the night sky. Enjoy a view like never before with our 14 inch telescope that even allows you to see the rings of Saturn. Bring something to sit on and dress for the weather. Preregistration is limited to 40 participants.

Estel Wenrick Wetlands

Meet at Medway Lot, corner of Spangler and Lower Valley Pike

Please bring pruners or loppers if possible.

Need some exercise and some great time outside? Join us for a fun conservation day in the park while helping remove invasive species from the natural area. The B-W Greenway and Clark County Park District help to maintain the health of the Estel Wenrick Wetlands by removing the invasive honeysuckle plant and garlic mustard so that native plants can thrive.

Please dress for the weather and wear old clothes: long sleeves, long pants, hat and solid shoes (or rubber boots) and work gloves. Bring plenty of water to drink. Must be with parent or guardian if under 16 years of age.

*The Gantlet 5K Trail Run, Sunday, April 17, 2 p.m.

George Rogers Clark Park

$25 Registration Fee

This challenging 5K run/walk takes you to the most beautiful hidden corners of George Rogers Clark Park. Put on your running shoes and get active with us that day. Registration forms are available online at www.fccpd.org. (This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Clark County Park District, with participation from the George Rogers Clark Heritage Association and the First Mad River Light Artillery.)

*Mother/Daughter Tea Party, Wednesday, April 20, 1:30-3 p.m.

Hertzler House, George Rogers Clark Park

Tour the Hertzler House, have some tea and cookies and enjoy some time with your mother, grandmother or aunt. This program is open to seven mother/daughter pairs (or 14 people). This program is $5.00 per person.

*Wetland Warriors, Things that Fly Hike, Thursday, April 21, 4-6 p.m.

Leadingham Prairie

Discover the world of butterflies, birds and bats at the prairie. Who’s coming back from their wintering grounds and what do they eat?

*Wildflowers of Spring, Friday, April 22, 9:30-11 a.m.

George Rogers Clark Park, Meet at Demint Shelter

Ages 12 and up

Hike the beautiful trails while looking for spring blooming wildflowers. The hike begins at the Demint Shelter, led by Pam Bennett, Park District Commissioner who is with the Ohio State University Extension. This hike is a joint effort with National Trail Parks and Recreation District. Registration deadline is April 18.

*Homeschool History Program, Animal Signs, Wednesday, April 27, 1:30-3 p.m.

George Rogers Clark Park; Meet at Demint Shelter

When Tecumseh was a child, how did he use the forest in which he lived? Discover the signs to look for to find wildlife in the forest. Dress for a hike that day. Preregistration is limited to 40 participants.

*Spring at New Boston, Saturday, April 30 – Sunday, May 1, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

George Rogers Clark Park – Gathering House

Join the George Rogers Clark Heritage Association at the Gathering House for a plant sale and educational programs. Please call the Heritage Association at 937-882-9216 to register for more details.
