Benefit for food pantries is Sunday

Local churches are working together to raise awareness and donations for local food pantries during an event this weekend.

The Pack the Pantry Celebration will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Urbana Church of the Nazarene, 1999 E. state Route 29. The event is sponsored by the Champaign County Ministerial Association.

Urbana Church of the Nazarene Pastor Larry Hall said the event gives local churches an opportunity to come together to help benefit local food pantries. The three ministry centers’ proceeds will be donated to are the Caring Kitchen, Stepping Stones and The WhereHouse.

Hall said the event is an opportunity to raise awareness about the different organizations and about the need for support in the county.

“It’s a chance for us to come together and celebrate those ministries and maybe even give more information about them so churches can be better informed about what their ministries are,” Hall said.

The offering received will be divided equally between the three pantries. Donations can be made during Sunday’s ceremony and Hall said checks can be made out to the Champaign County Ministerial Association.

In addition to monetary donations, Hall hopes people will take time to help the local pantries.

“It’s one thing to throw money at something, it’s another thing to say ‘hey I’ll spend time, I’ll give my talents to help out with those particular ministries,’” Hall said.
