The Urbana Police Division recovered firearms, drugs and alcohol during a traffic stop that took place over the weekend.
According to a press release, Urbana police were dispatched to a report of trespassers acting suspicious near an abandoned residence on Boyce Street Saturday at 3:45 p.m.
Police learned that the subjects had gotten into a grey 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck and left the area as police were still en route to investigate.
Officer Mike Hughes observed the vehicle in the downtown area and conducted a stop of the truck in front of the post office. Sgt. Josh Jacobs arrived as a backup officer and together the officers spoke with the occupants, recovering drugs, alcohol and weapons from the vehicle.
Police found the driver was an unlicensed 15-year-old juvenile female from Columbus and that she had been drinking alcohol.
The owner of the truck, Jose Nunez, 19, of Columbus, was a front seat passenger who had also been drinking alcohol.
Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell stated Nunez’s case will be presented to an upcoming Champaign County grand jury and charges will include a fourth degree felony carrying concealed weapons charge in addition to misdemeanor criminal trespassing, underage consumption, possession of marijuana paraphernalia and purchasing a firearm underage charges.
The two firearms recovered were a .45 caliber Glock handgun with a 10-round magazine as well as a .9mm caliber Ruger handgun with a 12-round magazine.
Sitting in the backseat of the truck was a 15-year-old juvenile female from Heath who had also been drinking alcohol.
Also in the backseat was Sergio Salgado, 20, of Columbus, who was charged with misdemeanors of criminal trespassing, underage consumption and possession of marijuana.
The two juveniles were released to a responsible adult and will be charged into juvenile court with underage consumption of alcohol and criminal trespassing.
